A forest is a curious beast. It covers the slopes spread out far below us, just as hair takes a face by surprise and overgrows the topography of that gateway of the throat, where the tongue dips like a subterranean river. Forests are persistently burned. They are just as persistently cut down. Forests are cleared, thinned, and wiped out for coffee to sprout in their place and render man forever sleepless and insane. MARKO POGAČAR was born in 1984 in Split, Yugoslavia. He has published fourteen books of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction, for which he has been awarded numerous Croatian and international awards. In 2014, he edited the Young Croatian Lyric anthology, followed by The Edge of a Page: New Poetry in Croatia (2019). He has received fellowships, grants, and stipends from organizations such as Civitella Ranieri, Récollets-Paris, Brandenburger Tor, Passa Porta, and DAAD Berliner Künstlerprogramm. His work has been translated into over thirty languages. His poetry collection, Dead Letter Office (2020), was a finalist for the National Translation Award.
MIRZA PURIĆ is a literary translator from German, BCS, and Slovene, most recently of Faruk Šehić’s Under Pressure (Istros Books, 2019) and, in cotranslation with Ellen Elias-Bursać, of Miljenko Jergović’s Inshallah, Madonna, Inshallah (forthcoming, Archipelago Books). His work has appeared in AGNI, Asymptote, EuropeNow, Lit Hub, and elsewhere. He is a contributing editor at EuropeNow, and has served as an editor-at-large at Asymptote.
